Character Artist


Hardsuit Labs is looking for a skilled and motivated Character Artist to join our team! Help drive and contribute to the character art pipeline on a variety of projects, while collaborating with a talented team of artists, animators, designers, and programmers.


You enjoy creating assets within a wide range of visual styles, from realistic to heavily stylized. Your friends and coworkers call you Gandalf because your ability to translate 2D concepts and reference material into high quality 3D characters is nothing short of wizardry.  It doesn’t matter if you are tasked with making an organic or hard surface/sci-fi character model, you can create both with ease. You really strive in a team oriented environment and feel comfortable working with minimal input.

Basic Qualifications

  • An advanced knowledge of sculpting human anatomy and realistic clothing.
  • Knowledge of Maya, Photoshop, Zbrush, and other 2D/3D applications.
  • A keen eye for color, materials and texture painting.
  • Must have an understanding of real-time PBR shader development in Unreal Engine 4.
  • Must have an exceptional understanding of human and animal anatomy and the ability to take that knowledge and create believable creature anatomy.
  • Thorough understanding of 3D character art pipelines.
  • This individual will create deformable and efficient models with clean topology and optimized UV layouts.
  • Candidates should be able to work with minimal input and be comfortable working in a team environment.
  • 3+ years of experience making character models for games.
  • Traditional art skills (drawing, painting, sculpting)
  • Knowledge of Maya, Photoshop, Zbrush, and other 2D/3D applications.
  • Proven experience in a professional game production pipeline.
  • Fully capable of resolving a range of complex artistic development issues for both artists as well as other team members.
  • Candidates should be able to work with minimal input and be comfortable working in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Intimate knowledge of Unreal 4 in regards to character production.
  • Experience with Marvelous Designer.
  • Experience with using 3D scan data as a base.
  • Related skills such as weight skinning, node-based material development, 2d concept art skills.


  • Create high-poly and low-poly models and accompanying texture sets that use advanced shaders.
  • Proactively facilitating requests or information needs regarding any aspect of the character art creation process
  • Collaborate with art director, designers, programmers and animators on object specifications and deliveries.
  • Collaborating with the Production group to coordinate task lists to ensure assignments are progressing as expected according to schedules, milestones and overall project goals. This entails strong time management and prioritization skills.
  • Contributor to the development of the artistic techniques and processes utilized to define and achieve a product's visual style or encourage artistic evolution within the studio. Working on expanding methods to improve the production pipeline, tools, systems and visual integrity.
  • Taking constructive criticism and maintaining a professional attitude.
